How to Plan an Outdoor Kitchen
An outdoor kitchen turns the garden into a place for cooking and entertaining. A little planning up front helps you choose the right layout and avoid surprises on installation day.
1. Decide how you cook
Think about what you will cook most. A gas grill suits everyday cooking, a plancha is great for quick, sociable food, a Kamado egg handles slow cooking and smoking, and a pizza oven adds something different. Many layouts combine several.
2. Choose a layout
- Compact units: a single grill or plancha module with storage, ideal for smaller gardens.
- L-shaped kitchens: more worktop, a fridge, drawers and space for a grill and Kamado, suited to larger gatherings.
Browse our modular outdoor kitchens. Modular systems let modules be added or removed, so you can tailor a layout to your space.
3. Think about worktops and materials
Look for strong, weather-ready construction. Powder-coated steel modules and a sintered stone worktop such as Neolith are designed to be scratch-resistant, stain-resistant and suited to outdoor use, so they are easy to keep looking good.
4. Storage and appliances
Check what is included, such as cabinets, drawers, gas bottle storage, a fridge or end panels, and what is sold separately. Our product pages list exactly what is in each kitchen.
5. Add shelter
Covering the kitchen with a pergola makes it usable in more weather and gives shade while you cook. See our aluminium pergolas, including louvred and electric roof options. Planning permission may not be needed, depending on your property and local rules, so check with your local authority.
6. Check gas, power and siting
- Some units need a mains electrical point, so check before you order.
- Gas connections should be fitted by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.
- Choose a level, stable base and keep the kitchen clear of fences, walls and anything flammable.
7. Plan for delivery
Kitchens are large and heavy. Make sure there is clear access to your garden, and contact us if access is narrow or restricted.
