How to Choose an Outdoor Sofa or Lounge Set
A good outdoor sofa should look right, feel comfortable and cope with British weather year after year. This guide covers what matters when you are choosing, so you can spend with confidence.
1. Start with your space
Measure the area first, then mark out the footprint with tape or chalk. Allow room to walk around the set and for chairs to be pulled out. Corner lounge sets suit larger terraces; two-seater and three-seater sofa pairs work well where you want a social, face-to-face layout.
2. Sofa, lounge or daybed?
- Sofa collections: sofas facing each other with a central table, ideal for conversation. Browse our outdoor sofa sets.
- Lounge collections: corner and modular layouts with deeper seating, built for relaxing. See our lounge sets.
- Daybeds: generous, bed-sized seating for lying back. See our daybeds.
3. Frame materials
- Aluminium: light, rust-resistant and low maintenance. A powder-coated finish protects it and keeps it looking fresh.
- Teak: a dense hardwood that suits outdoor use. Left untreated it weathers to a soft silver-grey; oiling it keeps the warmer colour.
Many premium sets combine the two, using aluminium for strength and teak for warmth.
4. Rope or wicker weave
Woven rope and HDPE wicker are both designed to resist sun and rain. Rope gives a softer, more contemporary look, while wicker has a classic woven finish. Check that the weave is made for outdoor use and sits on a rust-resistant frame.
5. Cushions and fabric
Cushions make the biggest difference to comfort and to how well a set lasts. Look for:
- Quick-dry foam with an open-cell structure, so water drains through and the cushions dry fast after rain.
- Weather-resistant outdoor fabric that resists fading and mildew.
- Secure fastenings such as loops and toggles, so cushions do not slide.
6. Modular layouts
Modular sets let you rearrange pieces as your garden or needs change. Check what is included, such as sofas, corner units, tables and side tables, so you know exactly what you are buying.
7. Looking after your set
- Wipe frames with mild soapy water and rinse.
- Brush and air cushions regularly; store them or use covers through winter if you can.
- Check any fixings once or twice a year.
